Durban Gets a Daily Link to Addis - Whether It Gets Cargo Space Is Still an Open Question

Ethiopian Airlines will launch a daily Durban–Addis Ababa service on 11 December using a Boeing 737 MAX. Whether any of that aircraft is available for commercial cargo has not been confirmed.

A new route announcement and a new airfreight lane are not the same thing. Belly capacity is whatever is left after passengers and their bags — and on a narrowbody, that margin is thin. KwaZulu-Natal has the connection. It does not yet have the space.

What has been confirmed

Bookings have opened for the daily service, which launches on 11 December. It has been welcomed by Durban Direct, the route development initiative bringing together aviation, tourism and government stakeholders. Through Ethiopian’s Addis Ababa hub, Durban gains one-stop access to destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America.

Dube TradePort Corporation Communications Manager Vincent Zwane said available information indicates that carrying commercial cargo on the service could be viable, but was careful not to overstate it. “We have the information and data to show the viability of the service carrying cargo,” he said — while stressing that this should not yet be regarded as a confirmed offering.

The unresolved variable: the amount of cargo capacity available on the aircraft has not yet been established. It depends on aircraft configuration and what remains after passenger baggage and other requirements are accommodated. (Source: Dube TradePort Corporation via Freight News, 2026)

Why the aircraft type is the whole story

A widebody on a long-haul rotation typically leaves meaningful hold volume for freight after baggage. A narrowbody on a route with strong passenger demand and generous baggage allowances often does not. That is why Dube TradePort is treating cargo as a question rather than an announcement, and why it intends to seek further clarity from the Ethiopian Airlines Country Manager — including whether the airline plans to target particular commodities or cargo flows on the Durban route.

That last point is the one to watch. An airline that targets specific commodities is signalling a cargo strategy. An airline that simply sells whatever space happens to be spare is offering a convenience, not a lane. Forwarders should wait to see which of the two this becomes before quoting it to customers.

The road leg is the part that already exists

If commercial belly capacity does materialise, the immediate beneficiaries are time-sensitive, high-value and low-volume consignments out of KwaZulu-Natal — pharmaceuticals, electronics, spares, perishables in small lots and documents. Those are exactly the shipments that currently road-freight to OR Tambo because that is where the capacity is.

For road operators, a working Durban air gateway shortens some runs and shortens some quotes. King Shaka sits alongside the Dube TradePort precinct, so the trucking leg for a Durban-region consignment becomes local rather than a 570-kilometre Gauteng haul. As KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Musa Zondi put it, Addis’s network means “Durban and the province in general will be more connected to global markets than ever before”. The freight version of that sentence still has a condition attached to it.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Do not re-plan airfreight routings on this yet — there is no confirmed capacity to book. Do ask your air forwarder to flag it the moment Ethiopian publishes a cargo offering for the route, and to tell you which commodities it will accept. If it lands, the win for KwaZulu-Natal shippers is a shorter, cheaper road leg to the airport; for Gauteng-based hauliers who currently carry that freight south to north, it is volume worth watching.
