Three Capitals in One Week: South Africa Goes Looking for Demand That Is Not American

Deputy Trade, Industry and Competition Minister John Steenhuisen is spending this week in Czechia, Poland and Germany, chairing two joint economic commissions and meeting industry. The trip is explicitly framed as export diversification following higher United States import tariffs — and the countries chosen tell you which cargo the department expects to move.

A trade mission is not freight, and freight forwarders should not price one as though it were. But the sectors named on this itinerary — renewable energy, critical mineral beneficiation, chemicals, advanced manufacturing, rail and electric vehicles — describe the cargo mix Pretoria is trying to build, and that is a longer-dated signal worth reading.

Prague: a small partner with a specific list

Steenhuisen chairs the sixth session of the South Africa-Czechia Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation and meets businesses on export opportunities, industrial cooperation and investment. Czechia was South Africa's ninth-largest EU trading partner in 2025, with bilateral trade of US$1.1 billion (R17.8 billion). Czech investment in South Africa already spans renewable energy, electronic components, boat building, textiles, communications, hospitality and services.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition says the visit will explore diversifying South African exports and attracting investment across renewable energy, defence, critical mineral beneficiation, chemicals, advanced manufacturing, rail and electric vehicles. Discussions are also expected to cover the SADC-EU Economic Partnership Agreement and Clean Trade and Investment Partnership projects — which is the part with regional reach, because the EPA is a SADC instrument, not a South African one.

The three trade lines: Czechia US$1.1bn (R17.8bn) in 2025; Poland up 7% to US$1.6bn (R25.8bn); Germany up about 14% to US$16.5bn (R266.3bn). (Source: dtic via Freight News, 2026)

Warsaw: a first meeting, not a renewal

In Poland, Steenhuisen co-chairs the inaugural session of the South Africa-Poland Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation with Polish deputy minister of economic development and technology Michał Baranowski, alongside a South Africa-Poland Business Roundtable. Bilateral trade rose 7% from US$1.5 billion (R24.2 billion) in 2024 to US$1.6 billion (R25.8 billion) in 2025, making Poland South Africa's seventh-largest EU trading partner.

The word "inaugural" is the detail. A first commission session means the institutional plumbing between the two economies is being laid now, not renewed — which is the slowest phase of any trade relationship and the least likely to generate near-term volume. The stated focus areas are renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and the automotive sector, with potential industrial cooperation in green manufacturing, mineral processing, robotics, industrial automation, tooling, precision engineering and research and development.

Munich and Frankfurt: where the volume already is

Germany is the substantive leg. It is South Africa's third-largest trading partner globally after China and the United States, and its largest in the EU, with bilateral trade up roughly 14% from US$14.3 billion (R230.8 billion) in 2024 to US$16.5 billion (R266.3 billion) in 2025. In Munich the programme includes Bavarian state secretary for economic affairs, regional development and energy Tobias Gotthardt, representatives of BMW and Siemens, and the UnternehmerTUM innovation centre. Frankfurt brings a chamber of commerce roundtable, industrial site visits and the South African pavilion at the Automechanika automotive trade exhibition.

Existing German-linked initiatives cited by the dtic include the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme, supporting energy and water efficiency in industrial parks and special economic zones, and Partnering in Business with Germany, which mentors small and medium-sized enterprises seeking international markets. For freight operators the German automotive thread is the one to watch, because it connects directly to South African assembly volumes, component flows and the port pairs that serve them — and that is a trade lane where a policy conversation can eventually show up as boxes.

What This Means for SADC Logistics Operators

Do not re-plan capacity on a ministerial visit — joint commissions move on a multi-year clock and an inaugural session moves slower still. Do watch the sector list, because renewable energy components, processed minerals and automotive parts have very different handling, packaging and port requirements from the bulk commodities that dominate today's North-bound flows. If your customers export under the SADC-EU EPA, the rules-of-origin and cumulation discussions on this agenda matter more to their landed cost than any of the headline trade figures.
