From today, 31 August 2026, Airlink begins marketing Doha as its first long-haul destination through an expanded codeshare with Qatar Airways. The arrangement places Airlink's 4Z code on Qatar Airways services from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with the Durban rotation operating via Maputo on Airbus A350 aircraft.

A passenger codeshare is not usually freight news. This one carries a routing detail worth reading twice: a daily widebody rotation that touches Durban and Maputo on the way to a Gulf hub, on a region where most air freight still has to be trucked to Johannesburg first.
Airlink’s 4Z code now appears on Qatar Airways-operated flights between South Africa and Doha: double-daily services from Johannesburg, up to double-daily from Cape Town, and a daily service from Durban routed via Maputo. All of the services are operated with Airbus A350 equipment, and onward connections are through Hamad International Airport.
The expansion builds on an existing relationship. A reciprocal codeshare signed in 2022 already allowed Qatar Airways to place its QR code on Airlink’s domestic and regional network, and Qatar Airways acquired a 25% minority shareholding in Airlink in 2024. Today’s step reverses the direction of travel: for the first time, the South African carrier is selling beyond the African continent under its own code.
Market context: Total African international capacity in August 2026 is about 21.5 million seats; Ethiopian Airlines is the largest African carrier at 2.2 million seats, up 10.9% year on year. (Source: OAG, 2026)
Most scheduled long-haul capacity out of Southern Africa concentrates at OR Tambo. That concentration is the reason so much regional air freight moves by road first — perishables from KwaZulu-Natal, mining components for Mozambique, high-value spares for Zimbabwe and Zambia — before it ever sees an aircraft. Every one of those road legs adds handling, cost and a cut-off time.
A daily A350 rotation that calls at Durban and Maputo puts scheduled widebody capacity onto two points that have historically been fed rather than served. Whether that translates into usable freight capacity depends on load factors, cargo handling arrangements at each station and how the two carriers choose to sell the bellyhold — none of which has been published.
This announcement is a passenger commercial arrangement. Cargo terms, bellyhold allocation and rates have not been disclosed, and a codeshare does not by itself create sellable freight capacity on a route. Treat it as a question to put to your forwarder rather than a capacity assumption to build a quote on.
The wider context is a market that is growing in seats faster than in freighters. Total African international capacity for August 2026 sits at about 21.5 million seats, and the largest African carrier by seats is Ethiopian at 2.2 million, up 10.9% year on year. Belly capacity is where much of Africa’s incremental air freight room is now appearing, which makes passenger network changes worth reading as freight news.
If you consolidate air freight out of KwaZulu-Natal or Maputo, ask your forwarder this week whether bellyhold on the new Durban and Maputo rotations is being offered and at what cut-off. If it is, you may be able to remove a road leg to Johannesburg from certain lanes. If it is not, nothing changes yet — but the routing now exists, and capacity usually follows demand that can be demonstrated.
